Working from home means spending the day between your laptop, a second screen and video calls, often without leaving the same chair. If you're looking for glasses for working from home, here's what's actually worth checking: that they're comfortable for hours, that they get on with your headphones, that they don't cause trouble on camera, and what a blue light filter can and can't do.

What to ask of glasses for working from home

  • Light weight. Eight hours in a heavy frame is something you feel on your nose and behind your ears.
  • Slim, flexible arms. They're the ones that sit best under over-ear headphones.
  • A clear lens. If you work with design, photos or just colour-coded spreadsheets, you don't want a lens that tints everything yellow.
  • Non-prescription, if your eyesight is fine. A neutral lens doesn't change how you see. If you need correction, the answer is different (more on that below).
  • That you like them. On video calls, your glasses are almost the only thing you're wearing that people see.

Glasses and video calls: how to avoid reflections

The classic problem with wearing glasses in an online meeting is that the screen reflects in your lenses and everyone sees two white rectangles instead of your eyes. It's fixed more by your setup than by your glasses:

  • Turn down the screen brightness. It's what reduces the reflection most. Dark mode helps too.
  • Raise the camera to eye level. With your laptop on a stand, the screen no longer points straight at your lenses.
  • Light your face from the front or the side. A lamp or a window to one side works better than the light from the screen itself.
  • Avoid having a window behind you. It leaves you backlit and forces you to turn the brightness up.
  • Tilt the screen slightly. A few degrees is enough to move the reflection out of frame.

A note about lenses with a blue light filter: at certain angles they show a very faint bluish reflection. That's the filter itself. With a white screen at full brightness it can show on camera; with the settings above, it almost disappears.

What a blue light filter does and doesn't do

It cuts part of the blue light given off by your computer and phone. That's a property of the lens and it can be measured. What hasn't been proven is that it relieves eye strain or improves sleep: the scientific evidence is limited, and we cover it in full in do blue light glasses work?.

Put another way: you choose glasses for working from home because they're comfortable, because they don't change colours and because you like wearing them. They're not a treatment.

Your setup matters more than your glasses

  • Distance: the screen about an arm's length away (around 50-70 cm).
  • Height: the top edge at eye level or slightly below.
  • Light: natural and from the side whenever you can; never work in the dark with the screen as your only light.
  • Breaks: every 20 minutes, look at something far away for 20 seconds. That's the 20-20-20 rule.
  • Blinking: people blink less in front of a screen. If you finish the day with dry or irritated eyes, talk to an eye care professional.

If you need a prescription

Non-prescription glasses won't help you: you can't wear them over other glasses and they don't correct anything. There are prescription lenses designed for desk distances; whether you need them, and which ones, is for an optometrist to decide after an eye test. If you wear contact lenses, on the other hand, you can wear non-prescription glasses over them.

Frequently asked questions

Are non-prescription glasses any good for working from home?

If your eyesight is fine, yes: they don't change how you see and they add the filter and the frame. If things look blurry or you lean in to read the screen, get an eye test first.

Can I wear them with over-ear headphones?

Yes, and the slimmer and more flexible the arms, the better. Put your glasses on first, then the headphones.

Does the filter show on video calls?

You may see a faint bluish reflection if the screen is very bright. Turning the brightness down and raising the camera reduces it a lot.

Can I wear them all day at work?

Yes. The lens is neutral, so the only thing that counts is that the frame feels comfortable.
