Square Non-Prescription Glasses: Which Faces They Suit and How to Choose
Updated LenBlu® Team
If you're about to wear glasses for the first time and don't know where to start, start with square glasses. It's the most balanced shape: it gives the face structure, flatters most people and doesn't depend on trends. In this guide we look at which faces it suits best, why size matters more than shape and what to check if you want them non-prescription.
What counts as square glasses
A square frame has a lens almost as tall as it is wide, with defined angles and corners that are more or less softened. It differs from a rectangular frame, which is clearly wider than it is tall and therefore looks more serious and more "office".
Square sits halfway between round, which softens, and rectangular, which hardens. That's why it works as well with a T-shirt as with a blazer.
Which faces they suit
The classic rule is to go for contrast: straight lines for faces with curves, and the other way round.
| Face shape | How square frames look |
|---|---|
| Round | Very good. The angles of the frame add structure and lengthen the face. |
| Oval | Very good. Almost everything suits this face; a square frame gives it character. |
| Long | Good, if the lens has enough height: it visually shortens the face. |
| Heart or triangle | Good, ideally in a slim or clear frame that doesn't weigh down the top half. |
| Square, with a strong jaw | Works if the corners are soft and the frame is slim; otherwise it can look harsh. |
Take it as a guide, not a law: what matters most is how you see yourself. You'll find the detail, shape by shape, in how to choose a frame for your face shape.
Size matters more than shape
Glasses in the right shape and the wrong size look worse than the other way round. Check three things:
- Total width: it should be close to the width of your face, without sticking out at the sides or pressing on your temples.
- Eyebrows: the top of the frame should follow their line without hiding them completely.
- Bridge: if it's narrow, the glasses sit high; if it's wide, they slide down.
The most reliable way to get it right when buying online is to compare the measurements with a pair that already fits you: they're the three numbers printed on the inside of the arm. We explain it step by step in what size glasses am I?.
Slim or thick frame
- Slim: light, discreet and easy. The best choice if you don't want glasses to change your face too much.
- Thick: it has presence and makes the glasses the centre of the outfit. It takes more confidence and usually weighs more.
Colour changes the effect
The same square frame looks different depending on the colour. In clear you see the shape but not the weight: it's the softest version. In black the shape takes over and your eyes look more defined. Each has its own guide: clear frame glasses for men and women and black non-prescription glasses.
Square non-prescription glasses: what to check
- That the product page clearly says "non-prescription" or "0.00", not a strength like +1.00: those are reading glasses.
- That the lens is flat and doesn't distort when you look through it at an angle.
- That the frame is light: if you're going to wear them for hours, you'll notice.
- That the measurements are published and there's a returns policy.
If you only want them as an accessory, our guide to non-prescription fake glasses will help.

Frequently asked questions
Are square glasses unisex?
Yes. The shape is the same for men and women; it's the size you need to get right.
What's the difference between square and rectangular?
The proportions. On a square frame the lens is almost as tall as it is wide; on a rectangular one it's noticeably wider than it is tall.
What if I have a square face?
You can wear them, ideally slim with soft corners. If you want to soften your jaw, a clear frame helps.
Are there square non-prescription glasses with a filter for screens?
Yes. LenBlu® glasses have a clear lens that filters part of the blue light from screens, with no yellow tint.
